I mean this is just the norm anyway for them right? Like even when they were married they had that extended break for a writer to use as warm on on Spidey? Something about a Stalker of MJ kidnapping her & once found she decided to live in Los Angeles for awhile?

Something about a Stalker of MJ kidnapping her & once found she decided to live in Los Angeles for awhile? J, Michael Strazynski loved writing Peter and MJ and wanted to really bring the marriage back into prominence...but to do that he had to address that the couple had been having problems in the previous run that could not just be brushed aside. He took advantage of the struggles to tell a captivating, emotionally-charged journey of self discovery for the characters that made their love altogether stronger despite not being as perfect as fans wanted it to be. Compare that to their journey after JMS left and the marriage retconned...where the two had nothing but constant tension and MJ had a more spiteful or dismissive attitude towards Peter whenever he let her down, almost as if she could no longer understand him. This wasn't to 'build them up', this was to deconstruct and 'prove' to readers that they were entirely unsuited for each other, and if you didn't like it, you were a big middle-aged meanie who deserved to get blocked on twitter for daring to care about continuity. In the meantime, the other comics, like the newspaper strip and Renew Your Vows, were still allowed to develop and grow Peter and MJ with minimal drama in their lives whatsoever, and the result was more popular feedback and fan appreciation. Nick Spencer may have rushed Peter back into a relationship with MJ, but all he wanted to tell was build off of what JMS had put back together in the first place...these two simply would not stay out of each other's way romantically and would always have each other's backs no matter what happened. |
