Simon Bennett, on twitter and on Rangerboard, was asked a couple of questions (one about Gokaiger in particular) and basically revealed what we as fans have been saying and feeling for years.
We all knew the actors, writers, directors and producers were held under strict rules by Saban during the Neo-Saban era and Beast Morphers, but some information he revealed makes the stuff we knew even worst.
I'll give the abridged version of every Backstage info, rules and restrictions they had to follow, etc. Simon Bennett revealed about every season from RPM to Beast Morphers.
About RPM:
When he first started, Simon said he was told that RPM, by Saban, was a failure because it was "too adult".
Nothing about Samurai at all....
About Super/Megaforce:
Simon revealed Why Gokaiger's obvious pirate motif was ignored throughout ALL of Super Megaforce. He says it's because, and I shit you not, SABAN HATES PIRATES and didn't want a pirate-themed season...(So why adapt Gokaiger and butcher it?)
About Dino Charge:
All these rules and restrictions were somewhat lifted during Dino Charge, but they clamped down hard on these rules when Dino SuperCharge came around.
About Ninja Steel:
They were NOT allowed to utilize the Ninja motif at all outside of "being stealthy."
There had to be 2 stand-alone Victor and Monty bits in EVERY episode. Every episode had to center around the "moral of the week" ala MMPR and every moment during fights had to be filled with "ADR puns".
He also revealed that one of the Saban executives had a hard-on for fart jokes and that Ninja Steel must be filled with as much as they can. The cast and crew hated them.
About Beast Morphers:
He confirmed that NO set-ups for later payoffs were allowed, no serial threads were allowed (expect the first 2 episodes and the final 2) and a rule that was obviously established since Megaforce, NO Evil rangers were allowed, unless they were robots, mind-controlled or put under a spell, meaning NO evil rangers who were evil of their own accord (Like the Psycho Rangers or the SPD A-Squad) were allowed.
So Saban basically sabotaged their own show.
Unless someone wants to tell me that they legitimately thought that fart jokes, slapstick, and puns would make their show better.
] will never understand the need to have "Ninja" in your title and strip everything both Ninja and Japanese from it.
All of the frustrating story decisions in the Neo-Saban and early Hasbro era are the result of boomer execs wanting to recapture MMPR’s 90s glory.
What do you think?
