Well, it's been three years since I actually rewatched this short film. But, I am just gonna have to be honest with you. I don't think that this "Power/Rangers" short film that Adi Shankar made was even that good to begin with. Production-wise, it's okay. But story-wise...not so much. However, my only problems with the short film are the direct callbacks to "Billy Cranston's sexual orientation" and "Trini Kwan's funeral scene". I understand that this short film is trying to be self-aware that David Yost is gay in real-life and that Jason David Frank never actually attended Thuy Trang's funeral service since he was attending the funeral services for his real-life brother, Eric Frank (David Trueheart from Power Rangers Zeo) on the same day. Yeah, that's mostly the funeral directors' fault on this one, or it could be JDF's family who decided to have the funeral service on the same day as Thuy Trang's funeral. Either way, we can't really blame that on JDF, himself. But still, my problem with these callbacks are this. Just because Thuy Trang (Trini Kwan) is dead in real-life doesn't mean that you have to kill off her character as well. Same with Billy Cranston being "openly-gay" in the short-film. Seriously, David Yost maybe gay in real-life, but the character of Billy Cranston is straight. Unless, if it's set in another universe where the character is openly-gay. It's like with Hikaru Sulu from Star Trek and his original actor, George Takei. Just because Takei-sempai is openly-gay in real-life doesn't mean that the character of Hikaru Sulu has to be gay in the original Star Trek universe. But in the J.J. Abrams movies, it's kind of a different interpretation of the character, in my opinion. Anyways, there was also the fact that Bulk and Skull were selling out tge Power Rangers for drigs in the short-film. Seriously...that is just downright stupid. Why would Bulk and Skull sell out the Power Rangers for drugs?! Now, if this was meant to be a callback to how the rangers kept screwing over Bulk and Skull for trying to figure out their secret identities in season two of MMPR, then okay. I guess that make sense. But, I don't know if Adi Shankar even watched season two of MMPR. Or even read the BOOM! Studios comic books to begin with. Still, it's just something I had to get off my chest.
Other than that, this short-film was okay. I mean, it's not the *clearing throat!* "Bad-ass, mature, oh-so serious, dark Power Rangers movie that we all wanted to see or whatever!" It's just okay, but really not all that great, in my opinion.

I thought it was pretty weak myself. Didn't understand the hype. But I'm glad it got people talking about Power Rangers again.

For me I never really liked it. The concept I thought was interesting. But how it turned out was just terrible and not what power Rangers should be.

I agree. I mean, yeah. Sure, many of us would want Power Rangers to be a bit more "mature" for an older audience. But, this is not want any of us would have in mind about how to make Power Rangers more mature for an older audience. It's okay to give one incarnation of the iconic characters such as Jason, Zack, Billy, Trini, Kimberly and Tommy a world where everything is supposed to be grounded in reality, but not like what Christopher Nolan was doing with the Dark Knight trilogy. That's his personal take on the Batman franchise and mythos. However, we have to understand one thing though...Power Rangers is one of the many materials that don't translate well into an "R-rated" movie or a "TV-MA" TV series/webseries. Deadpool, Blade, RoboCop and Wolverine can get away with having R-rated movies because they are intended to be seen as characters who lived and were created in that kind of universe, by their respective creators. Power Rangers should be made a "PG-13" movie adaptation, but the TV show itself needs to more appealing to 7-11 year-olds. Not 2-7 year-olds.

I didnt mind it because I always wanted to see "dark rangers" but now that I have seen it... Its a lil too much (yeah he over did it). I dont mind keeping it PG. In todays society PG-13 would be pushing the envelop. We just want the writing to be better and acting to be better. Give me another season like In Space, Lost Galaxy, Time Force or even RPM... Less goofiness and a deep story. The balance right now is terrible. There wasnt really one time during Ninja Steel where I thought... OHHHH This monster has a chance or this could be a problem. Everything is so playful and joyful....

That is what I want too. Yes it has always been and always be a kids show. But there a difference of going to the lower demeanor and pandering to real young demo. Vs having having a good balance of humor and a more maturity in writing where it's something older fans can enjoy yet still not to heavy the young kids can't enjoy it still. I don't know if neo Saban Era tone was from Nick call or Saban folks call. But with hasbro coming in now. I Def like to bring the tone and story direction back to some of the better series like is,lg,lsr,tf,ninja storm, dt, rpm. No reason we can't have that maturity and still include humor in right areas.

Exactly and thats what scares me about Hasbro... And now that Saban Studios is closed.... Hasbro now has the keys to the car. I'm betting in the future we will get a Power Rangers animated series thats Y-7. I hope they change the appeal to 7-11 because Y-7 will watch it anyway.

^The only way that they would be able to do an animated Power Rangers series is if Toei agrees to it. Toei had shot down that attempt to it in the past.

Yea as neat as it would be to have a cartoon series too. I doubt that would likely happen. As sure hasbro could do something good. But they be in same place as Disney and Saban was and are only licensing the brand from toei. And if toei doesn't want it we more then likely won't see it happen.
As for hasbro and tone and direction post bm. As I wouldn't expect much change yet for bm. But I Def want to see them go back to the 7 to 11 demo while of course the show still be label TV y7. But let's get tone and direction back to in space, tf, rpm direction. Something with more maturity in writing while yet still having the typical humor elements too. And not be talking down to viewers tone and baby like writing.

The real question is which of the past Power Rangers seasons or current sentai shows will be adapted into an animated series in the future, or....if Hasbro has a choice to adapt either Power Rangers Hyperforce or the Boom! Studios MMPR comic books into an animated series, which of these two have the potential of being a televised adaptation for a TV-Y7 audience?! Think about it.

I don't know why so many people are still fixated to this horrid fan film. It was bad, inmature and pretty awful in the treatment of their main characters. Why should take seriously a bad fan film where Jason is killed unceremoniously, like treating it like a nobody, for the only purpose of shocking the audience? Poor Trini has less than that. She had only a funeral. She didn't appear really. Billy? Of course, he's gay. Then, he's dead. Kim? She's just a twist in the plot. Zack. Oh, Zack. A combination of a joke and a bad power male fantasy. Cocaine, Black ops missions (where he can kill bad guys pretty brutally), and threesome with pornstars (yeah, Divatox and Scorpina are played by pornstars here. They are not even characters. Just sexual fantasies.). Oh, and Rocky. Just in name. He seems like an a#$hole. Because we need an friend turned villian here. But even I'm not big fan of Rocky, treated like this... The only " hero" ( if we can call it like that) is Tommy. Except he disappear abandoning his friends. Very heroic. Very Power Rangers. PR could be silly, but is about a group of people fighting together against a common goal, a common evil. The fanfilm (if we can call it that, because a fan wouldn't do that) is nothing about fighting togheter. Or friendship. Or helping people. Is nihilistic, the same level of Batman v. Superman. Is asking what one of your favourite superheroe could kill other of your favourite superheroes. IMHO, it's better to talk about the recent movie. It's better acted, they tried to make a film about superheroes fighting against evil, and the characters are good. It's a little gritty, but not nihilistic. It's not without flaws, and probably lacks more action, but I appreciated the effort.
