Your question is similar to when people comment with "I can't help with that". And nobody will answer your question because it's a troll question.

For anyone who is worried about the direction that Beast Morphers (season two) is going for once episode nine premieres in the fall, don't even bother. Y'all got nothing to worry about. It's just the production crew taking whatever table scraps Go-Busters left behind and just figuring out what kind of story they should tell with the remain episodes of stock footage they have left. Besides, if you really want to see how a show would instantly get screwed over in its' production, look at Megaforce/Super Megaforce or Ninja Steel/Super Ninja Steel. Those two shows were literally destined to fail in adaptation.

As much as I love teamups, was there a reason for this one?
Was this for an anniversary, episode milestone or just because?

If I were to guess, probably just because.

It's supposedly Judd Lynn's last season as the showrunner (although the new showrunner Simon Bennet confirmed he's helping to flesh out Dino Fury in some capacity), a lot of what's happening in the back end of the season appears to be him doing whatever he feels like doing.

This team-up happened because: - It was Judd Lynn's final season with the Power Rangers franchise. - It was Judd Lynn who called Austin St. John and asked him to come a reprise his role as Jason because of the reason stated above and in zarius's post. - Beast Morphers went all out to fix/modify all continuity issues from previous seasons so the series itself could get back on track. - Beecause Super Sentai did it. That's as obvious as a clear sky when you look at it. And I happen to have seen the team up on the Internet. No spoilers for those who still have not seen the team-up, although it's already known who did come back and who didn't for the episode. - Jason being in the team up makes it worth watching it. And both the actor and his character got the best treatment possible and they earned it. - No over-featured and over-forced Tommy. Thank God!

If Austin had declined do you think they would have gone down the line of MMPR rangers or just went straight for Tommy again?

They would probably ask Steve Cardenas to play Rocky again. Asking JDF to come back for this team-up wouldn't even make any sense since Dragon Ranger/Burai did not take part of the Sentai version of it.
And if SC would decline, than we would've basically gotten another in-suit only Ranger. But Judd knew EXACTLY what to with do and how to approach this team-up. Getting Austin back was the only right thing to do. And so was getting back as many cast members as possible. Besides, Austin nailed it to the top. The episode would not be the same with anyone else.

just cause his character didnt appear in the sentai. Tommy probably would have been used. Though as much as i do like tommy i would have liked some one who hasnt been back much. like you said above steve or even johnny who hasnt been seen since 15th anniversary.
