They totally missed the chance to bring back Dragonzord, Titanus, and the Ultrazord! Too bad...

“Once and Always came about in early 2022, after David had pitched his own idea for an MMPR reunion series to Hasbro execs (Quantum Continuum). They couldn’t commit to this for various political, budgetary and legal reasons - but did embrace the idea of a one-off special for the 30th anniversary year. Hence Once and Always.”-Simon Bennet

So as usual here I am late to the party. I got rid of my Netflix for a bit but with Cosmic Fury coming out soon I decided to resubscribe and finally get around to watching this.
You guys... this was everything.
It was so good. So, SO good. Are there problems? Of course, there's always some kind of problem, but everything else was so great I don't even feel the need to address them.
With the long history of this franchise which honestly didn't always make sense from time to time, it would have been SO easy for them to make some kind of continuity snarl, but the writers clearly did ALL of the required research. From the big things like the BRILLIANT way Rita came back to life to the little things like acknowledging how "too much pink energy is dangerous." I was so so impressed with all the references and call backs and keeping things in continuity. For example, how they included Annie from Dino Fury. The casuals who returned just to watch this special wouldn't know who she is and just think she's a random reporter but the inclusion of her and "Buzzblast Angel Grove" is like a little wink to the super fans like us.
Furthermore I was very impressed with the character work. Minh wanting to be a ranger but the coin not working until she was doing so for the right reasons was great. The tension between her and Billy was also done very well.
And a lot of this was just plain cool. Billy in lead position in the Megazord was awesome. Rocky's final attack on Minotaur was badass. Kat with the bow and Zack shooting out Rita mmm *chef's kiss*
Oh and shout out to Barbara Goodson for still giving it her absolute all despite being in her 70s. She's a big part of why I loved this show in the first place as a child and she still completely slays all these decades later.
And of course this special was very much a love letter to Trini, and it hit in all the right ways. Even though I was 100% expecting her to die, and tbh before this I had kind of just assumed she had been dead for years, seeing it happen was still absolutely devastating. And when Minh was talking about the morpher giving her memories of how much the team meant to her I teared up a bit.
Honestly there's much more I want to praise about this special but I'd just be typing for hours so I'll cut it off here. Once and always, fam, once and always.
